Quick crochet gifts to spread the gift of handmade
Everyone needs a great selection of quick gift crochet patterns! Simple projects to work up for craft fairs or to keep a stash on hand for friend gifts. Today, I decided to offer my full Boot Cuff collection for this offer. They're fun to make, the patterns include multiple sizes and it's a great way to use up your yarn stash.
I know boot cuffs are one of those things that people either love or hate. I think they're fun and a great way to add a little pop of color or texture to the wardrobe. I'm going to miss wearing boots and won't be able to wear the boot cuffs this winter due to an accident I had in August.
Here's my sad story...
The first weekend in August we went camping. We didn't make it to the campsite until around 7 or 8 at night so it was a rush to get everything set up and settled in. In our old trailer, I would pull the couch bed out for the girls to sleep on and the legs would automatically fold open and just set down on the floor. Since we bought a new trailer with bunk beds, I hadn't used the couch bed much. This time, one of my girls wanted to sleep on the couch for extra space so I started pulling the bed out and without thinking, I dropped the end of the cushion and the bar fell right across my foot. The legs don't pull open with this new couch and I just wasn't thinking. I have never felt so much pain. I turned around and held on to the counter and my husband walked over to see if I was ok. My head was spinning and my stomach was queezy. He grabbed onto me and was going to help me up to my bed and I don't remember what I was saying to him but in mid sentence, I passed out on him. I remember dreaming. It was a pretty, bright and peaceful dream and I didn't want to wake up. Really odd! I heard one of my daughters calling my name in a panic and I came to. I felt so bad for scaring them. I don't know how long I was out but they had time to put the couch bar up, get me pillows and prop me up. Brodie was smacking my face to try and get me to respond and the girls were calling out. Dream wise, it felt like I was out for quite a while.
When I was finally able to clear my mind and talk, Brodie asked if I wanted to go to the ER. I didn't want to ruin the family weekend more than I just had so I told him I'd wait it out. We put an icepack on my foot and waited a bit to see if it would settle down. I don't know how long it took but at some point, I couldn't stand the pain any more. I had never broken a bone before and was just praying it wasn't broke. I gave in and we drove down the canyon to the ER. They were BUSY! When they finally took us back to a room, it was clear in the back. It was a long wait in the room too. The nurses came in to check on my pain and surprisingly it wasn't hurting to bad at that point. They brought in the xray machine so I wouldn't have to walk down the hall which was much appreciated. While I was waiting, I found out there were 5 other foot injuries in there at the same time. How crazy is that??!!
I never did end up seeing a doctor. The assistant came in and said after looking at the xrays, they felt that it was just a really bad bruise and would take a week or so to heal with a basic boot. I sported that expensive new shoe out the door and we made it back to the trailer around 1am.
After 1 1/2-2 weeks in that boot, I was told I could go back to my regular shoes. It was still sore for a while but nothing major. After about a week of walking in my gymn shoes, I knew something was not right. I scheduled an appointment with a foot doctor and went in for more xrays. He saw the break and said unless the ER staff were looking at xrays of that type of break all the time, they wouldn't have seen it. It was a break that even he didn't see much unless the whole foot had crushed bones. He put me in the big boot for another 2 weeks for the break to heal and then told me to go back to my gymn shoes for 2 weeks. I could tell my foot was healing but never felt 100%. I went back and had more xrays and a CT scan. They saw the bone was healing but slower than normal though they realized that there was some damage to the nerve. I was given a Cortisone shot in my foot to try and relax the nerve. WORST shot EVER! Sadly, after 2 weeks, that shot didn't work like it should have and back to the Dr I went. My options then were to get another shot in a different spot or use the Icy Hot patches daily for a bit to see if that would relax the nerve OR orthopedic inserts to adjust the soles of my shoes OR surgery. I wasn't ready for surgery yet and didn't want another shot so I opted for the patches while waiting for the orthopedic inserts. The patches felt better for a while but this past week, they haven't helped at all. My inserts came in yesterday and I have to work up to being able to wear them all day long.
Yesterday, I wore some leggings with a nice long sweater and the only shoes I own that look great with it are heeled boots. I thought I could handle them for 1 day and boy was I wrong. It was a painful day and I realized I won't be able to wear heels again. SO sad and disappointing. I'm learning to not take the little things for granted. Hopefully you can enjoy wearing the boot cuffs for me this year.
