Shell Brook Square Blanket Free Crochet Pattern

Every now and then, it's nice to have a simple crochet project that you can work without giving it much thought.  Something that will keep your hands crocheting while watching your favorite TV series or movie.  This Shell Brook Square Blanket crochet pattern is just the one you need for those times!!

This blanket is worked in a Granny Square blanket style from the center out making it easy to work to your desired size.  Whether you want a baby blanket  or a king size throw, this crochet pattern leaves the final size totally in your control.

With that in mind, it also allows you to use your favorite yarn and hook size.  I've worked this in Caron Simply Soft yarn and Mandala yarn but you can easily use Red Heart Super Saver or a baby yarn too.

Here's what you'll need:

​Materials:   1181 yards  #3 Mandala or any yarn of your choice
Hook: H/8-5.00mm  or size suggested by yarn label                                                                   
Gauge:  H hook 16 dc & 9 rows = 4” (only needed if you’re using #3 Mandala yarn and want the same size below.  Otherwise, just work to your desired size                                
Finished Size:  36”x 36”

Stitch Abbreviations: 
       st(s) – stitch(es)         
       ch – chain 
       sl st – slip stitch 
       sc - single crochet
       dc – double crochet

Special Stitches:
       7 Shell: 7 dc in same stitch

Notes: 

1. Instructions with *to* are to be worked once and then repeated the number of times indicated
   
2. Instructions with [..] are only worked the number of times indicated to the right of the bracket 
   
3. (sc, ch 2) at beginning of each round counts as a dc
   
4. The 4th dc of the 7 Shell is the ONLY stitch in the shell that will be used through the body of the blanket (see photo below)
   
5. For a striped blanket, switch colors at the beginning of the Shell rounds
   
6. The first few sections of this blanket may be wavy to begin but will flatten out as the blanket gets bigger
   

Chain 5, sl st to beginning chain to form a ring

Round 1: Ch 2, (5 dc, ch 2) 4x around ring, sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to connect

Round 2: Turn, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) around corner ch-2, dc in next st, skip next st, 7 Shell in next st, skip next st, dc in next st, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) around corner ch-2, dc in next st, skip next st, 7 Shell in next st, skip next st, dc in next st,* repeat from *to* 2x, sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to connect, slip st in next st, sl st around corner ch-2
