Free Enchanted Garden Granny Square Blanket Crochet Pattern

If you like the look of the Enchanted Garden Blanket but need a simple project to work on the go, this one is for you!  I designed the Enchanted Garden Granny Square years ago using some random yarn colors that I had in my stash.   I liked the look of the square but not the colors and I just wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it.  That square just ended up in a "what now" pile for 9 years.  I pulled it out a few months ago and decided it needed to come to life again and started designing the Enchanted Garden Blanket.  It's funny how things work out with just a simple color change!  Once I started working my 2nd full blanket, I knew I needed to release the Granny option too.
This is a great option for crocheting on the go, using up your yarn stash and perfect for making blankets for shelters or other service projects.  I've always struggled with Granny square blankets because of the randomness of the squares and colors used.  It drives me crazy having square colors not coordinate and trying to figure out which colors to stitch next to each other in hopes they'll still look semi decent.

This crochet pattern will help bring everything together nicely using a fun border around each square and then continuing that stitch pattern into the full blanket border to give it a great finished and pulled together look.

We'll start with the center diamond in Part 1, square the diamond off in Part 2 and then Part 3 will show you how to add the individual square borders, connect the squares and add the final blanket border.  I'll even give you a few tips and tricks along the way to make things easier.
Each section of the written pattern is also accompanied by a full video tutorial.

Click HERE to purchase Blocking Board
This is the blocking board that I have to make sure all my squares are blocked to the same straight edges.  This one has been really nice as it has a lot of pegs allowing me to stack multiple sections at a time.
I crocheted all the diamonds first and stacked them with these pegs on the board and then as I worked the next section, I would start another block of pegs for that section.  This helped me keep all the pieces in 1 simple place and easily view how many more I needed to work through each step of the pattern.  Click on the photo to purchase your own blocking board.

Gauge: 12”x12”

Fasten off and weave in ends
Connecting squares:

You will need around 120” yarn for each side of square connecting
Example: Connecting 4 squares together will give you 4 (inside) sides x 120” = 480” yarn (13.33 total yards)
Connecting the 5x5 Square blanket, you’ll have 16 (inside) sides to connect x 120” = 1920” yarn (53.33 total yards)

Note: I recommend working all your squares first and then connecting them in rows so it’s 1 long seamless connection instead of so many ends to weave in at the end.
Holding 2 squares together with wrong sides facing each other, begin connecting both corner ch-2’s together from right to left
*[sl st, ch 1]2x around corner ch-2, working in same sts of both squares together so they line up evenly,  (sl st in next st, ch 1) in each st across to end of square, [sl st, ch 1]2x around corner ch-2,* repeat from *to* across to end ch-2 picking up next 2 squares of blanket as needed
At the final ch-2, fasten off and weave in ends

Repeat connection instructions for each row horizontally and vertically
Border:
Yarn qty will vary based on how many squares you're connecting together.
You'll need an average of 13 yards per square side.
Example: If you're connecting 4 squares together,  that equals 8 sides x 13 yards for a total of 104 yards for the border
Round 1: Turn, sl st around corner ch-2, (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) around corner ch-2, *skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, bptr around skipped st]10x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st,
3 dc around end ch-2 of square, ch 2, 3 dc in first ch-2 of next square,* repeat from *to* across up to end square,

End square:
skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, bptr around skipped st]10x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) around corner ch-2,**
Repeat from *to** 2x

Repeat from *to* 1x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, bptr around skipped st]10x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working behind sts just made, dtr in skipped st, sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to connect
Round 2: Sl st in next two sts and around corner ch-2, turn, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) around same corner ch-2,
*skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, fptr around skipped st]12x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st,
skip ch-2 between squares,* repeat from *to* across up to end square,

End Squre:
skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, fptr around skipped st]12x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) around corner ch-2**

Repeat from *to** 2x

Repeat from *to* 1x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st, [skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, fptr around skipped st]12x, skip next st, dc in next 2 sts, working in front of sts just made, dtr in skipped st, sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to connect

Having 4 beautiful girls of my own has also inspired many infant, toddler and child size dresses.  They are my biggest cheerleaders and have enjoyed wearing the things I've made them.
